614Volunteer ("we," "us") connects volunteers in Central Ohio with local organizations that need help. This page explains what information we collect, why, and who can see it.
When you sign up for a shift as a volunteer, we collect the name, email, phone number (optional), and any note you choose to add. No account or password is required to sign up for a shift.
Volunteers can choose to create an account to see and manage their signups in one place. We collect your name and either an email address and password, your Google account's name and email (if you sign in with Google), or your mobile phone number (if you sign in with a texted code).
When an organization creates a business account, we collect the organization name and the same sign-in details: an email address and password, a Google account, or a mobile phone number.
Passwords are hashed by our authentication provider (Supabase) — we never see or store them in plain text.
Your signup information is shared only with the specific organization whose shift you signed up for, so they can plan for your arrival and follow up if needed. Our database enforces this with row-level security rules: an organization can only ever query signups tied to its own listings, not anyone else's.
We use your email address to send you emails about your signups: a confirmation when you sign up; updates when the organization approves, declines, or removes you, or cancels the shift; a reminder a day or two before your shift; and, if you cancel your spot, a confirmation. The organization running a shift can also email the volunteers signed up for it through the site, including a thank-you note afterward. Each volunteer gets their own separate email, so no one sees anyone else's address. Organizations get account emails, plus a notice when a volunteer cancels.
To slow down abuse, the site briefly keeps track of how often each IP address makes certain requests. That record is kept only in memory and isn't saved.
We rely on a small number of outside services to run the site, and each sees only what it needs to do its job:
If you tap Use my location on the shift search, your browser shares your location with the page only so it can sort shifts by distance. It stays in your browser: we never send it to our servers or save it, and it's forgotten when you leave or refresh the page. (As with any area you view, the map then loads its street-map images for that area from our map provider.)
We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for advertising. We use it only to run volunteer signups, send the emails described on this site, and keep the service secure.
We don't use advertising or tracking cookies. If you have an account, a small amount of browser storage keeps you signed in between visits. While you're waiting for a sign-up or sign-in email, your email address is kept in that browser tab so the page can resend it; it's cleared when you close the tab. The site also remembers whether you chose the light or dark theme. Volunteers who sign up for a shift without an account have nothing stored on their device to identify them.
You can ask us to show you what information we have on file, or to delete it, at any time — see the Contact page. Organizations can also directly edit or delete their own listings and review or remove the volunteer signups tied to them from their dashboard.
